Mineral Pigments
Close observation and drawing inform these works of otters and plants in mineral pigments.
I had often painted otters without being able to observe them closely. In Japan, I first drew them at close range. Back in the studio, those drawings became a starting point for using mineral pigments to express their soft bodies.
Otter Biting Its Tail was my first work in mineral pigments. In early summer 2025, when irises were in bloom, I brought the flowers and otter together in the second work of this material exploration.
